Bai Maeng Lak - Lemon Basil sometimes called e-toois an annual herbaceous plant with slightly hairy and pale green leaves. It can be eaten either raw or cooked, and used as a flavouring.
It is sometimes called lemon-scented basil but definitely has a peppery taste when chewed.
Maeng lak contains approximately 0.7% volatile oil.
Therapeutic benefits include the alleviation of cough symptoms, and as diaphoretic and carminative agents.
Maeng lak is used in soups and to flavour steamed fish and vegetables. It has a real citrus-like aroma and flavour.
