Grand Royal Barge Procession 12 June 2006 - Chao Phraya River, Bangkok
As one of the most extravagant events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne, the Grand Royal Barge Procession will be held on 12 June this year on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. This will provide a rare opportunity for Bangkokians and visitors from the provinces and foreign countries to view this splendid waterborne pageantry.
There will be 52 spectacular barges rowed by 2,082 oarsmen from the Royal Thai Navy. The formation of the vessels is 1,200 meters long and 90 meters wide. The 3-kilometre-long procession is set along the Chao Phraya River from the Wasukri royal landing place, passing the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) ending at the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun).
Seating areas to view this spectacular event will be provided by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Bangkok Noi Railway Station, Royal Navy Club, Naval Hydrographic Department and Thammasat University. Restaurants along the river en route from Wasukri Pier to the Temple of Dawn will also be selling seats. Viewing from public piers and on Phra Pinklao Bridge is prohibited.
